The Northeastern African Student Organization has been the home far away from home for African students and those interested in the culture. Through programs such as the annual African Night cultural gala, comedy show, concert, pageant, forums and weekly meetings; NASO continues to expose the NU and Boston community to different aspects of the African culture that are often left out of the camera lenses, newspapers and magazines.
NASO was started in 1989 by 10 African students who had wanted to create a community that will serve as a surrogate home from Africa. They meet and discuss the different issues, which continue to challenge the motherland, and worked together to help bring awareness about the continent on the Northeastern campus. Today, the organization has grown with its eight member executive board and more than 30 generals members, and continues the legacy of the original founders through events and projects in order to help shed light on all five regions of Africa; North, South, East, West and Central.
