Since freshman orientation, when I learned about NASO through my orientation leader, Indira, then an executive member of NASO, I was intrigued with the concept of an African student organization. In my high school there was no African student group and this is why I fully embrace being part of a community of Africans. Each year that I have been a part of NASO, I have become more knowledgeable about the continent and fell totally in love with the African race. I am a pure Salone titi in every aspect, and though I have been in the U.S. for twelve years I dream about my homeland daily and I am counting down the days till I will go visit and eventually return to stay.

I love NASO because I feel it is a community where those of us who are African we can relate to one another and where non-Africans can come and broaden their horizons about African culture. I am excited to be a part of this extraordinary organization in the capacity of vice president!

Besides NASO, I am also the Treasurer of the Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (MAPS) and am fully dedicated to both organizations. I am also a member of the Unity Gospel Ensemble (UGE).

I love to sing, dance, read and STUDY! LOL! All in all, I’m very easy to get along with, though it takes just a little while for me to warm-up to new people, but I love meeting new people and remember names and faces very well. So, don’t be shy, say hello!

I joined NASO because as an African I wanted to meet fellow Africans, learn about different cultures and take about issues that affect our continent that non other organizations would address. I also wanted to be part of n organization that not only taught members about diversity of the African continent, but let the whole community experience it through a number of cultural events, held during the school year.

The first time I heard bout NASO, I was not interested at all. It was not until I was approached by Petra, former president of NASO, who convinced me to come to a meeting that I decided to give it a try. After that one meeting, I began to like NASO and after a couple of meetings I came to love NASO and what it was about; educating, community, fun and service. I have learned a lot from being part of the organization and hope to continue its legacy.

Major: Journalism
Position: Public Relation
Country: Mali

Before NASO I never really had the chance to interact with other Africans outside of my family, or the opportunity to learn about the different cultural subgroups within the African culture. However, now I have learned so much. NASO has made it possible for me to get to know other Africans and see how similar their cultural values are to mine. NASO creates an amazing atmosphere that I can relate to people, and also a great group for people who are not Africans. It helps them to dispel their stereotypes about Africa and learn about the more positive side of Africa.

Northeastern University did not offer the diversity I looked for in my college search until I found NASO. NASO has been like another home and I enjoy the discussions we have about issues affecting the motherland. I feel like being part of NASO is helping me move forwards as far as learning how to contribute to changing the world. I like reading, writing, singing, taking pictures and watching cartoons (Sponge Bob is where it’s at).

However I consider Myself African/Sierra Leonean 100 percent from the way I walk, the way I move, the food I eat, and this is because of the way I was brought up. I love AFRICA!!!
